The Hanseatic town

Bryggen is a collection of buildings from the Hanseatic era. Bergen joined the Hanseatic federation in 1343. Within this area the federation had been given more or less free hands to govern themselves. Bryggen represented therefore in many ways an own, independent state within the town. Bryggen is included to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
